The Minnesota Emerging Software Advisory (MESA) is proud to announce a remarkable milestone for its mentees: collectively, they have raised an impressive $1.1 billion in funding. This achievement is a testament to the value of consistent, experience-driven mentorship. By connecting startup CEOs with seasoned software executives, MESA empowers software startup founders to thrive in Minnesota’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.
A Unique Mentorship Model
MESA stands apart with its mission to grow the size and vibrancy of Minnesota’s software startup community through pro bono mentoring. The program connects Founder CEOs with experienced C-level software executives who offer guidance and insight without compensation or equity stakes. MESA mentors—active or retired executives with startup experience themselves—commit to providing candid, honest advice on a monthly basis for two to four years. This long-term, trust-based mentorship helps founders accelerate their learning and growth while avoiding common pitfalls.
The Impact of MESA Mentorship
To date, MESA has completed 93 mentoring engagements, with 30 currently active. The program has seen 41 companies graduate, meaning they concluded their mentoring journey either by achieving operational sustainability or through a successful acquisition. Among these graduates, 25 have celebrated major financial milestones, including significant capital raises, debt funding, acquisitions, or IPOs.
MESA’s 2024 investment roundup revealed this new fund raising milestone and the collective success of MESA mentees, with four standout graduates—Sezzle, When I Work, Player’s Health, and Dispatch—leading the charge. Their accomplishments reflect the ripple effect of MESA’s mentoring approach: fostering innovation, growth, and resilience in Minnesota’s startup software sector.
Building a Vibrant Future
MESA’s mentors, many of whom have navigated the complexities of scaling startups themselves, are the backbone that supports the emerging software startups in the MESA Mentoring Program. Their pro bono contributions represent a commitment to strengthening the Minnesota software ecosystem by equipping the next generation of leaders with the tools, skills, and insights needed to succeed.
The $1.1 billion funding milestone is a testament to the vision, dedication, and collaborative spirit of both the mentees and mentors involved in the MESA Mentoring Program. As MESA continues to nurture the entrepreneurial ambitions of Minnesota’s software founders, the future of the state’s startup landscape looks brighter than ever.
