Every startup needs capital. But according to Rick Brimacomb, capital alone rarely determines success. The companies that thrive are the ones with experienced partners willing to roll up their sleeves, help solve difficult challenges, and stay committed through every stage of growth. That founder-first philosophy has defined Brimacomb Capital for more than two decades, and it’s one of the reasons the firm has become such a natural fit as a MESA Premier Partner.
Not Your Typical Investor
In the startup world, there are operators and there are investors. Rick Brimacomb has spent his career with one foot in each.
Through Brimacomb Capital, Rick invests primarily in early-stage, capital-efficient SaaS and technology-enabled businesses with proven market traction and strong growth potential. Since founding the firm in 2005, he has built a portfolio of 12 companies, seven of them SaaS, where he was the first outside investor. Those investments have helped generate more than $200 million in capital raised or business value created, with multiple successful exits delivering returns ranging from 13x to 25x.
While Brimacomb Capital often begins with an initial investment, Rick frequently continues supporting companies through subsequent rounds, investing up to $1 million or more over time in businesses he believes in. In 2025 alone, two portfolio companies achieved successful exits, while several others secured additional funding to fuel their next stage of growth.
For Rick, however, success isn’t measured simply by the size of an investment or the return it generates.
“Did we help the company raise the capital it needed? Did we help position the founders for a successful exit or the next phase of growth? Those are the outcomes that matter,” Rick shares.
Unlike many investment firms, Brimacomb Capital isn’t driven by an investment committee or a rigid fund timeline. Rick makes investment decisions independently, allowing him to take a long-term view and focus on what’s best for each company. The result is an investment model that combines financial backing with strategic partnership—giving founders both capital and an experienced advisor invested in their long-term success.
A Partner Founders Can Count On
Building a startup can be rewarding—but it can also be isolating.
“There are plenty of things a founder can’t easily share,” Rick says. “You may not want to burden your leadership team, and you don’t always want to deliver difficult news to your investors.”
That’s why Rick has intentionally built Brimacomb Capital to be a different kind of partner.
“I’m in the boat with them,” he says. “We’re working to solve problems together, not pointing fingers or judging from the shore.”
Rather than simply monitoring progress from the boardroom, Rick becomes a trusted advisor. He’s someone founders call after landing a major customer, navigating a difficult decision, or working through an unexpected setback. His role extends well beyond financing, offering strategic guidance, introductions to investors and executives, recruiting support, and an experienced perspective gained from decades in investment banking, venture capital, and private equity.
Just like MESA mentors, Rick understands that founders are people first. Whether discussing business strategy or celebrating life’s milestones, or helping navigate its inevitable challenges, he believes the strongest partnerships are built on trust, empathy, and open communication.
Brimacomb delivers a hands-on approach that gives portfolio companies far more than access to capital. It gives them a trusted partner who is genuinely invested in their success.
Shared Values, Shared Mission
Rick didn’t simply become acquainted with MESA—he sought the organization out.
He recognized a community that shares many of the same values that have guided Brimacomb Capital: a focus on Minnesota’s software ecosystem, a commitment to helping founders succeed, and a belief that experienced guidance can be every bit as valuable as capital.
“I looked at MESA and its strong bench of mentors, and saw people with similar philosophies,” Rick says. “We’re all trying to help founders build stronger companies and create meaningful impact for Minnesota’s software community. They’re the kind of people I want to be around.”
Since becoming a Premier Partner, Brimacomb Capital has become an active collaborator with MESA, partnering on Club E educational events and helping connect founders with practical insights and experienced voices from across the region’s software community.

“From the beginning, it was clear that Brimacomb Capital and MESA share many of the same values,” John Moroney, MESA president shares. “We’re both passionate about helping founders navigate the challenges of building successful software companies, and we both believe experienced guidance can change the trajectory of a business. Rick has become a terrific partner for MESA, and we’re excited to continue working together to support Minnesota’s startup community.”
Investing in Minnesota’s Future
Brimacomb and MESA believe every successful startup creates a ripple effect: new jobs, stronger businesses, more investment, and a healthier technology ecosystem.
“When our companies succeed, everyone benefits,” Rick says. “It’s not just a financial win. It creates opportunities for employees, supports families, strengthens communities, and inspires the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
That belief is one of the reasons the partnership between Brimacomb Capital and MESA feels so natural. While each organization contributes in slightly different but related ways, both are committed to helping founders build enduring software companies and strengthening Minnesota’s startup community for years to come.
Together, we’re proving that the most valuable investment isn’t measured only in dollars—it’s measured in the lasting success of the companies, founders, and communities they help grow.
